Can you have more than one timer running at a time? You certainly can. If you start the timer for more than one task the additional timer will show up in the footer.

Second part follow up:
Can 5 people have their timer running for the same task? They sure can.
When you start the timer on a task it is starting for you...not the person that the task is assigned to.
